The desert was hot today, very hot. The sun seemed to concentrate all its rays down on Nevada that particular day. As if the sun had decided how hot it could possibly make a state before the people below started melting in the heat. Eggs were probably cooking in the shell, meat was slowly being cooked to a dry well done, and a shower head became a firespitter. Most people were inside today because of this, enjoying their semi cool beers and air conditioning that at least prevented sweat to roll down their backs and into their eyes. Most of the desert was deserted as well. Even the lizards who usually found comfort in the warm sun ran to cooling shelter from its harsh rays.

This did not stop Nick Alaster however.

A red jeep ran along the sand, kicking up the grains as it passed. The roof was removed for decent breeze. It was a shame the windshield couldn't be removed as well. The wind in Nick's face would have been much more welcome than the short whiffs he felt along his dark scalp. The sun reflected off the hood of the jeep, thankfully not in Nick's direction, but would warn any one ahead of the determined man on his way through the desert. Its engine ran dependently so far, showing hardly any signs of weakness. It was cheap to, perhaps Nick's luck was turning around.

Nick turned the jeep sharply to the left as he spotted an actual road. He had come from some remote town, but from there it was all desert. They had a broken road and the jeep would sooner die there than on the sand. The jeep jumped a foot in the air as it left a sand dune and the weak but trying grip of the sand itself. Nick grunted as the jeep shook and landed on solid flat asphalt. He wiped a bit of sweat from his brow with his shirt as he straightened the vehicle on the right lane. His shirt was more than damp by now. Nick had exposed himself to the heat for nearly four hours now and his once white shirt was taking most of the punishment. Because of the constantly added sweat it had turned a more gray color.

Nick looked idly at a map that sat, stapled, to the seat next to him. Much easier than holding it. He wasn't sure what road he was on, but remember heading west from the circle on the map that indicated his starting point. It looked like route 66, he couldn't help but laugh. It was hot enough to be hell at least. Nick pushed his sunglasses back into place with one had as he put his eyes back on the road.

A moment of panic struck Nick as he saw a bobcat crossing the road in front of him.

"Damn!" Nick gripped the wheel tightly and swerved to try and avoid the wild cat. The bobcat hissed before quickly sprinting to the other side of the road and eventually out of sight. Nick's wheels screeched as he tried to maintain control. Eventually the jeep ran into a sand dun and flipped. Nick was thrown out of the jeep and into a sand dune about five feet away. He heard the jeep roll and crunch along the sand. For a moment, Nick didn't want to stand. He couldn't but he simply did not want to. He didn't want to see what kind of condition the jeep would be in.

Eventually, Nick attempted it. His world swam at first as the feelings finally set in from the initial shock and panic. His stomach churned a bit as he tried and steadied himself to his feet. His legs ached as did his head. It didn't feel too bad and after feeling for someone like blood or bone, he found he was overall, ok. He turned his head, making his world flip over than back into place. Once the world calmed down he saw his jeep. It had landed on its wheels, but smoke was rising from the engine. Nick walked over to the jeep, stumbling every now and then, even falling once, getting sand in his mouth and nose. Finally he arrived, shaken and coughing.

"Oh...no..." Nick groaned as he opened the hood. The hood actually broke then and he pushed it off the jeep. Smoke rose even thicker now from the engine and he knew the thing was busted. Nick knew a few things about cars, but this was out of his league. So much for his electronkinesis. If only the battery was just dead.

Hopelessly, Nick leaned against the side of the jeep. He put his head in his hands and thought dimly what to do next.
