"Jennifer…"
"No mother, I don’t want to go, not to Aunt Eliza’s again. Why do I always have to go somewhere when you go on an adventure, why can’t I come along too?"
She was so much like Isabelle had been when she was Jennifer’s age, always wanting to come with her parents when they left somewhere. But when it came to choose between staying with their staff or go to another part of the family, Jennifer always went away, she didn’t want to stay at home in the big house when she could go play with her cousins.
"Next time we’re going somewhere you can come, I promise," was all she could tell her daughter. And little Jenny would come along next time; they were only going to New York, that couldn’t be all that dangerous, now could it? Sure there had been quite a lot of weird things happening in that city, but if James or herself looked after Jenny, no one could possibly get to her. Right now they had a trip to the Eternal City planned, they had been invited to track down some history there for a few weeks.
Their trip to Rome had been inconclusive and they quickly returned home to Jennifer and their little private museum, which was commonly known as the Loughlin estate. They had a few horses, because in their profession you had to have many skills, and there were places cars couldn’t get you, a dog to keep Jennifer company on lonely nights and plenty of room for a kid to play. Isabelle had married well, and luckily her husband shared her interest in historical artefacts and recovering them and together they’d made a few discoveries and made a living out of their hobby. By any means they had everything they could ever ask for, but it wasn’t enough. They needed the thrill of the adventure, the possible dangers and everything like that to treasure what they had and to be happy.
James wasn’t by any means close to his wife’s level of understanding when it came to the ancient languages they came across, or any other language for that matter, but he was good at digging up history and to know when they were given a good offer and when to take it. He liked to think it was his brilliance that had given them everything they now had, but he also had to take care of keeping their daughter out of the way, make sure she didn’t see things she wasn’t supposed to and things like that. It wasn’t a good idea to let her see their guns or play with the swords they had in certain areas of the house. It wasn’t a good idea to have little Jenny overhear things that were said when her parents were planning their next adventure either; they didn’t want her to be worries or have bad dreams. They cared for her in their own way; part of the reason why they did what they did was to give her whatever she needed.
“Sleep now, Jennifer, and when you wake up, it will be a whole new day and we are going to take you on a little adventure.”
They really did love their daughter.
